The Nissan LEAF just checked off another to do on its list. The award-winning EV went to Denmark to compete in the inaugural Oresund Rally - a competition open exclusively to electric vehicles (EVs).
The Danish EV rally was dramatically different from events in which conventional petrol cars compete. There were no dirt storms or aerobatic-like moments. Rather, the main criteria judged at the Oresund Rally was timing, which kept things pretty calm.
Competitors were tasked with passing established checkpoints on time. Tardiness resulted in penalties. Being early didn't work to competitors' advantage, either. That also resulted in docked points. Of all the EVs competing in the race, including a handful from highly respected automakers, the Nissan LEAF performed at the most punctual pace.
In summarizing the Nissan LEAF EV's first-place finish at the first Oresund Rally, Taina Erkkila, Communications Director, Nissan Nordic Europe, said, "Winning is always nice but winning against all other EV manufacturers is great - and it showcased the Nissan LEAF strongpoint very well, a reliable and exciting car that will get you where you want on time..."1
Who drove the Nissan LEAF to its championship title? Good question. The lead driver was Tim Svanhold, a perennial pick for the "Rally Driver of the Year" award. His co-driver was non-other than the highly-esteemed Bjarne Kristense. The teams' performance at Oresund, underlines Svanhold's second championship title at a Danish rally.
